1) understand what you have
2) understand what you want – your objectives – and why you want it
3) understand the proposed technology and how it will interact with other products, providers, and partners
4) never downplay the necessary work
5) understand liabilities of each one of the involved parties (incl. your company)
6) understand your investment risks and vendors’ ability to deliver
7) understand how long can your company stay with the solution – in light of foreseeable new requirements.
